Ear Infections

Have you seen your dog shaking their head or scratching behind their ears? These are signs of ear infections, which occur most often in the summertime. Dogs who swim or have baths often in the summer need to have their ears dried with a soft cloth, especially if they have heavy ear flaps that keep the air out. Ear infections can also be the result of allergies to food or the outdoor environment. Look inside your dog’s ear, and if you see anything other than a clean, pink, healthy ear, it’s important to bring them in for immediate veterinary care. 

Hiking Safety Tips

Hiking is a great summertime activity for you and your dog, but don’t forget to take every precaution for your pet’s safety before you go! Besides for flea and tick preventative, a comfortable collar or harness, and bringing plenty of drinking water for your pet, it’s also important to research your hiking destination. Make sure the trails you are hiking on are dog-friendly. Also, check to see what kind of wildlife you can expect to see on the trail, avoiding trails where rattlesnakes are prevalent, or where bears are often spotted. The best way to have a good time with you dog is to be sure they’re safe.

Mosquitoes and Heartworm

Mosquitoes are most people’s least favorite thing about summer. Well, guess what! They’re your pet’s least favorite thing too! Mosquito bites are itchy and frustrating, but worse, they can transmit heartworm disease to your pet. It’s important to think of your pet’s safety as you spend days in the yard and evenings on the porch, and even as you hang out inside the house with the windows open. Be sure your pets—both indoor and outdoor pets—are protected against heartworm disease at all times.
